Yiddish Students Win Fellowships to Bring Yiddish to CampusesFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Nancy Sherman, executive vice president, 413-256-4900 ext 104 AMHERST, MA – July 28, 2008 – The National Yiddish Book Center has named five outstanding students from its summer internship program as the Jewish Cultural Fellows for 2008. This year, the Book Center named Lisa Anchin of Columbia University, Samantha Kaplan Zantopp of the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, Joshua Milstein of the University of Chicago, Rachel Surden of Temple University, and Alexander Traum of John Hopkins University. The Jewish Cultural Fellows Program is a unique opportunity for college students who take part in the Book Center’s Steiner Summer Internship Program for College Students. The Steiner Program provides academically oriented internships in Yiddish language and culture at the Book Center in Amherst, MA. The Jewish Cultural Fellows are charged with bringing activities related to Yiddish language, literature, and culture to their college campuses in the upcoming academic year, serving as Yiddish “ambassadors” to their peers. They will receive logistical support, training in community and campus organizing, and funding to produce and promote up to four programs over the course of the academic year. These programs may feature guest speakers, theatrical performances, workshops, reading groups, Yiddish films, and concerts. “All the students who come here as interns are talented, motivated, and committed to learning about Yiddish culture,” says Nancy Sherman, executive vice president of the National Yiddish Book Center. “The five selected as fellows have demonstrated their interests in pursuing work in the field, and we’re confident that they will enrich their campus communities with new and creative programming.” The Jewish Cultural Fellows Program recently received funding from Steven Spielberg’s Righteous Persons Foundation, and is also supported by a bequest from the estate of Ruthe B. Cowl, of Laredo, TX. The National Yiddish Book Center is a 30,000-member organization dedicated to rescuing and distributing Yiddish and other Jewish books and opening their contents to the world. Its headquarters in Amherst, MA, houses the Jack and Ruthe B. Cowl Center for Jewish Culture, the Steven Spielberg Digital Yiddish Library, and a range of other cultural and educational resources. In 2009 it will open a new School for Jewish Culture in an expanded facility. For more information about the National Yiddish Book Center, visit www.yiddishbookcenter.org. - END - |
